This includes all types of chest infections, obstructive airway diseases like asthma, COPD and the alikes, various interstitial lung disorders, occupational lung diseases, pleural diseases, allergic lung conditions, sleep related lung disorders, lung malignancies, vascular lung diseases and so on and so forth.


Pneumonia is an infection in one or both lungs. It may involve just one small section of the lung or it may encompass the entire lung. This often impairs the body’s ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. The severity of the pneumonia depends on the strength of the bacteria and how quickly the patient is diagnosed and treated… Age, health, and immune status are also factors for severity.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) usually results from a blood clot in the leg that travels to the lung. Symptoms of a PE may include shortness of breath, chest pain particularly upon breathing in, and coughing up blood. Symptoms of a blood clot in the leg may also be present such as a red, warm, swollen, and painful leg. Severe cases can lead to passing out, abnormally low blood pressure and sudden death.

These are a group of diseases in which various areas of the lungs dries up because of various known and unknown factors. Patients usually complain of shortness of breath and mild cough which progresses over time and the patient lands up being oxygen dependent and bedridden if not detected early and treated adequately. Charnock hospital has a state-of-the art interstitial lung disease unit in the Dept. of Pulmonology to provide early detection and treatment of these patients.

Asthma is a common long term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm. Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Environmental factors include exposure to air pollution and allergens. Other potential triggers include medications such as aspirin and beta blockers.

Lung cancer, also known as lung carcinoma, is a malignant lung tumor characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. If left untreated, this growth can spread beyond the lung by the process of metastasis into nearby tissue or other parts of the body. Most cancers that start in the lung, known as primary lung cancers, are carcinomas.
